ChatGPT and the GPT API serve different use cases
ChatGPT is a product for people to use directly. A GPT API lets developers call models from a website, application, or automation through HTTP requests. An API integration generally needs an API key, a base URL, and a model ID supported by the account.
A ChatGPT subscription does not automatically provide an API key or API usage. OpenAI explains that ChatGPT and the API platform use separate billing systems. Check the sign-in, credentials, limits, and billing rules for the API service you use. Read OpenAI’s billing guidance.
How is GPT API usage billed?
API services typically bill according to the usage of a specific model and feature. Input, output, and other billable items can differ, so a ChatGPT subscription price is not a reliable way to estimate API costs. Start with a short prompt and a small output limit, then review the request’s usage record.
On API Rove, the actual price, available models, and limits depend on the signed-in account configuration. The public directory helps identify listed model IDs; it does not promise a fixed retail price. Review models and pricing and confirm your actual account price and permissions in the console.
What is a unified AI API gateway?
A unified AI API gateway gives an application one API entry point and a place to manage API credentials. It can simplify configuration, but developers should still verify the target model’s endpoints, parameters, and account access. “Compatible” does not mean every model supports every feature.
API Rove’s current public, verified directory includes selected GPT and Grok text models. The directory may change, and actual access depends on your account. Read about the trade-offs of using one API for multiple AI models.
How to integrate a GPT API
- Confirm the model ID, supported endpoint, account price, and usage limit.
- Create an API key and keep it only on a trusted server or in a secrets manager.
- Set the SDK base URL to
https://apirove.com/v1. - Send a request using the format supported by the model, then check the response and usage record.
OpenAI’s developer documentation also advises treating API keys as secrets and not exposing them in browser or client-side code. Read the API authentication guidance. See API Rove’s cURL and Python integration examples.
GPT API launch checklist
- Use an API key, not your ChatGPT web sign-in.
- Confirm the account can access the model and that its endpoint matches your SDK method.
- Test requests, streaming (if needed), timeouts, and retries with low limits.
- Check the usage record and actual account charges.
- Keep the key server-side; revoke and rotate it if exposed.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT Plus include API usage?
No. ChatGPT subscriptions and API usage use separate billing systems. Review the balance and usage record for the API service you use.
Do I need the official OpenAI SDK to call a GPT API?
Not necessarily. You can use an SDK that supports a custom base URL or send HTTP requests directly. Match the SDK method and endpoint to the model you intend to use.
Where can I see API Rove pricing?
Sign in to see the prices and limits configured for your account. The public pages do not treat a model provider’s reference price as your API Rove charge.
