What “OpenAI-compatible” means
A service may use request bodies and authentication patterns similar to the OpenAI API. This can make an existing SDK easier to configure, but it does not imply support for every OpenAI endpoint or parameter.
For an AI API gateway, one base URL can simplify application configuration across multiple models. You still need a model ID authorized for your account and the request format supported by that model.
Configure an OpenAI-compatible API in three steps
- Check the model ID, account access, price, and usage limits.
- Set the SDK base URL to
https://apirove.com/v1. - Pass your API key from a trusted server using
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY.
Clients with custom-provider settings can usually add a provider using the API Rove base URL and key. Field names vary by client. Follow the API documentation for request examples.
Compatibility has limits
Responses API and Chat Completions use different payload formats. Image, audio, video, embeddings, and tool-calling features each require explicit support. Never infer a model's capabilities from the gateway's base URL alone.
Test the exact model, endpoint, parameters, and SDK combination your application will use. Keep separate smoke tests for different integrations.
Production verification checklist
- Start with a short prompt and a small output limit.
- Check the returned model and response shape.
- Test server-sent events if your app depends on streaming.
- Review actual usage and account pricing after the request.
- Exercise timeout, cancellation, and retry behavior.
